SEEKING HELP

Seeking help for personal issues of growth or emotional difficulties can be confusing and overwhelming. Terms associated with this pursuit include ‘counseling’, ‘psychotherapy’, and ‘counseling psychology’. Each term offers different ways to explore personal experiences in order to increase our understanding of ourselves, allow for emotional healing, assist in recovery from difficulties and deepening our relationship to ourselves, others and life.

The therapeutic relationship you will enter into with this person may be primary to their credentials. Being a consumer of counseling, counseling psychology or psychotherapy services means finding a professional with the appropriate experience to practice legally in Alberta or British Columbia and is most importantly a “good fit” for you.

THE RIGHT FIT

Research consistently demonstrates that regardless of the specialized training of the therapist the most important and enduring quality of effective therapy is the person-to-person human relationship we develop with the “counselor”, “counseling psychologist” or “psychotherapist”.

For me, psychotherapy is about a sacred journey exploring our inner most thoughts, feelings and experiences. We often cannot do this alone. Finding a person we trust to support and guide us in our search for our truth is the most important. Through this relationship we can make meaning out of our experience, learn to be in the present moment and create a life worth living.
